design by Peter Gray
Unlike most Imperial designs, the Lance makes use of a heavy non-gravitic X-Ray laser to increase its offensive firepower at short range. A ten cell missle pack is fitted to a ventral tray, and its MFD can control up to five of the missles at any one time. It also boasts some of the heaviest armor ever built on an antebellum era Imperial Naval fighter, being swaddled in 3 cm of bonded superdense to enable it to survive direct laser attacks. A small stateroom is fitted for the three man crew, though they must hot bunk while on extended patrols.
The fighter has a distinctive appearance: a baroque combination of lifting body, with canards and variable geometry forward swept wings for atmospheric combat. The fighter relies mostly on its active sensors for establishing sensor locks, and almost always works in conjunction with other fighters or heavier ships. The Lance was used heavily during the Imperial Civil War, often aboard larger raiding ships, and it was one of the most commonly used fighters in commerce and Black War raids. In Regency service it is used as either an auxiliary to supplement the Magnum Heavy Fighter (See COACC, pg.83) or as a strike fighter by the Special Operations Command. Two other versions of this fighter exist in Regency service: a ground strike version with wing hardpoints and reconfigurable bomb bay, and the Lance-Bis, an N-PAW equipped defense fighter built for the 1140 Arms Program for interception of small vampire ships.
