Javelin Fighter

design by Peter Gray

This is an old Rob Dean design adapted to TNE stats (see http://www.solstation.com/core/deanfile/SHIP0292.HTM for MT details).

The Javelin fighter was first introduced, along with its big sister the Lance, after the Fourth Frontier War by the Glisten Planetary Navy as the result of poor performance by three then current classes of fighters carried aboard colonial warships. Following its successful debut in the Fifth Frontier War, the craft was updated to an Imperial Data Package (IDP) design, and was extensively marketed throughout the former Third Imperium. Tens of thousands of these vessels were produced by the Imperial Navy prior to the Civil War, and thousands more were produced during it by the major factions. While not as capable as the larger Magnum and Lance classes, its small size and weight allowed to be carried by a larger number of small warships, making it a staple of the booming starmerc trade during the last decade of the war.

To minimise weight, the vessels life support is optimised for a 56m3 space, which generally consists of the vessels workstations and the single bunkspace carried for long patrols. When the craft carries missles in its external grapples, its acceleration drops to 3.8G. Its primary armament is a top of the line 210 MJ laser lance, albeit at the lowest ROF available. The vessel is fitted with a 300,000 km MFD for mass firing of its missles.

The Javelin consists of a simple tapered cylinder, with a huge delta wing straight to the aft tip, giving an awkward albatross appearance. The craft is sans a vertical stabiliser, and the placement of the missle grapples along the bottom of the wing requires that it carries tandem bicycle style landing gear along the centerline, with smaller outrigger gear outfitted in the wingtips.

The Javelin was the standard Imperial Navy 20 ton fighter before the Civil War, and its local origin made it especially abundant in the Domain of Deneb forces. The fighter is a common combatant and patrol craft on many smaller destroyer and frigate class vessels, most notably the Corona and Thibeault class destroyers. It is a common presence on the Regency border, and many RQS units also field the design for commerce patrol at points of entry.
