Lika Destroyer Escort

design by Peter Gray

Based upon the HG design by Daniel Ward. See http://www.jtas.org/travelleratlas/Ships/Imperial/Lika.html for the original design.

The Lika class was built upon an even older Imperial TL-14 ship of the same name. Only about seven hundred of the TL-15 version were ever built for their main intended role: testbeds for the then brand new Black Globe defense screens. Because of space limitations for HPGs to absorb the hits taken by the BG, the class was with a J-5 capability, way beyond the required operating parameters available to the Imperial Navy. Some of this class saw combat against the Zhodani during the Fifth Frontier War, but their limited armament and armor were inadequate for targets heavier than civilian commerce raiders.

Unlike most USL designs, the Lika is equipped with CG Lifters. The designers wanted a ship that could land upon airless worlds or asteroids in case of emergencies or as a means of greater tactical flexibility. The vessel carries both landing gear and a special armature that allows it to moor to suitable asteroids or other small bodies.

Appearance: Like its near cousin the Chrysanthemum, the Lika is built on an unaerodynamic close structure configuration that forces reliance upon escorts and tankers for refuelling. The ship consists of a single egg-shaped forward hull, surrounded by a "gridiron" of trusswork that branches into three winglike projections. At end of each wing a single orb is connected; these contain the field coils for the prototype Black Globe.

Deployment: About a hundred Likas remain in Regency Navy service, concentrated along the Zhodani frontier. The age of the vessel, and its suitability for force projection, limits its deployment to specialised patrol and line squadrons that project the strength of the Regency Navy to traditional or historical adversaries. The 213rd Fleet (Swordbreakers) therefore has the largest contingent, of forty ships or so, that patrol up and down the Vargr frontier to deter a resumption of corsair raids.
