Erne Corvette
design by Peter Gray
The Erne class corvette is a Regency 1132
design. Inspired by the post Fifth War introduction of
the Zhodani Friants corvette, the Admiralty issued a
specification for a new small warship to supplement
the stock patrol cruiser for convoy escort and system
patrol duties. The specification was issued in late
1115, and bids from prospective manufacturers were
still being collected when Dulinor sparked the
Imperial Civil War. LSP of Starn was one of the
bidders, but had to shelve the design for the next
fifteen years. In the aftermath of the Collapse it
finally built a prototype with its own money, and
shrewdly marketed it to several systems that now made
up the Trailing frontier of the Regency. After Deneb
bought about sixty, the Regency Navy became
reinterested in the class, and assigned the hundreds
of ships it recieved to reserve or inactive duty naval
personnel, and sent thousands more as technical aid to
various planetary navys and contractors.
The Erne is named after a nautical bird of prey native
to old Terra. Only the two barbettes are fitted during
private or reserve service, leaving the turrets for
customisation, usually sandcasters. Missles are fitted
during regular line service, and an additional gunner
(and MFD) is carried. The Erne may be substituted for
the Patrol Cruiser during mustering out for Regency
Naval characters. Personnel who recieve this vessel
are considered to be part of the inactive reserve, and
are subject to recall for life.
