Van Allen Science Cruiser

design by Peter Gray

The Van Allen science vessel was a standard long endurance exploratory and research vessel commissioned for use by various megacorps, Imperial bureaucracies and private research firms. The vessel was mostly found in backwater and frontier regions of the former Imperium, often times visiting worlds interdicted to protect primitive sophont species from offworld contact.

Designed for long endurance, the ship boasts the ability to support up to two hundred science staff for up to five years without outside resupply. A large cargo bay makes up nearly twenty percent of the ships displacement, allowing for the carriage of a large amount of supplies. A large hangar annex allows it to carry either a large number of small craft and G-carriers for exploratory missions, or jump capable couriers and scout vessels. In appearance the Van Allen looks like an old steam iron, as it has a slab like body that tapers to a sharp "beak" prow. Van Allens are named after prominent scientific discoverers from the past.
