LSP MP-12B Mining Platform
design by Peter Gray
The LSP MP-12B is typical of antebellum era
Mining Platforms. Designed for the unglamorous job of
finding, mining and processing asteroidal ore bodies
for eventual refining and working, these vessels are
generally ugly in appearance and downright crude in
construction. The MP-12B was LSP's standard TL-12
mining platform, designed for maximum maintainability
and ease of obtaining replacement parts. Crew comfort
is at a minimum, with most sleeping on bunks, and
often hot bunking with the crews of docked Seekers.
The ship carries nineteen Prospecting Bubbles to do
ore body surveys, plant explosives and basic
mineralogy work. To further break up mined ore, and to
deter pirates, the ship is equipped with extensive
laser batteries. Grapples exist to allow for ten
mining seekers to dock, their crews drawing most of
their supplies from the Platforms deep pockets.
Mining Platforms were transported to an active mining
area by bulk carriers. Once a ship arrived, it usually
spent its lifetime insystem, with surplus platforms
being broken up for scrap or being sold secondhand to
interested parties. The ubiquity of these vessels and
their vulnerable computer systems means that
potentially thousands of these ships are infected with
active Viral strains. With their heavy armament they
can be especially deadly to unsuspecting survey and
recon crews. Caution is therefore advised when
approaching or examining one of these hulls.
(Mining Platform was adapted from stats given in the
old Beltstrike Module)
