Odyssey Exploratory Scout

design by Peter Gray

The Odyssey is an old Imperium 1116 design. The ship was designed just before the outbreak of the Fifth Frontier War to supplement or replace existing scout and recon craft in both Scout and Navy service. At 300 tons she carries heavier sensors and armament than the venerable Suleiman scout/courier, carries more cargo, and has both faster acceleration and longer range in both jump and maneuver categories. Thousands of these vessels were constructed just prior to the Imperial Civil War, and it is frequently encountered in Vampire Fleets. Thousands more have been constructed since the Collapse for the Regency military and security services. The RQS and Naval Pathfinders use it almost exclusively in their light scouting squadrons, often mating it with self maneuvering recon drones to increase their effectiveness. In military service, some of the cargo space is replaced with a pair of fixed missle tubes and reloads. The Odyssey is one of the most distinctive vessels in regular service, looking very much like stealth attack aircraft of a lower tech level. Two swept forward, variable geometry wings give it respectable atmospheric performance, and its hull is in the shape of an angular lifting body to further enhance lift and minimise drag during gas giant skimming operations. In TNE mustering out, Naval, Scout and RQS characters may substitute this vessel for a normal 300 to 600 ton ship. The folding array makes this one of the most expensive vessels in private or reserve service.
